How COAT DEFENSE® Brings Relief to Horses with Sweet Itch

How COAT DEFENSE® Brings Relief to Horses with Sweet Itch

Warmer weather got you itching to spend more time with your horse? While the sunshine and lack of snow or rain is great, it brings one major problem in a tiny package. Bugs. Deer flies. Gnats. Horse flies. Mosquitoes. Midges. Black flies. Fleas. Ticks. So. Many. Bugs.

Not only are they irritating to keep away but can cause serious issues in horses that have sensitive skin or are prone to breaking out. This can be a real headache for horse owners to deal with, especially when we’re spending our money on expensive fly spray, fly sheets and other bug deterrents.

We want our horses to enjoy this weather while it lasts, but how can we make that happen when an army of flying insects are constantly antagonizing them?

Here at COAT DEFENSE®, we’ve found a few ways to ease ailments with our Shampoo, Powder, and Paste. Read below to see how you can help keep your horse healthy, comfortable and happy this summer!

Sweet Itch in Horses

Sweet itch is the term used to describe equine insect hypersensitivity. This is a reaction to the insect saliva once it penetrates the skin, typically from swarms of tiny midges.

Signs of sweet itch usually appear 48-72 hours after being bitten, symptoms include…

  • Intense itchiness

  • Inflamed and red skin

  • Rubbing that causes hair loss

  • Crusty, weeping sores

  • Restlessness from chronic itch that causes weight loss and anxiousness

Recommended prevention routines include…

  • Limited turnout

  • Avoiding pasture time during dusk and dawn

  • Use fly sheets and fly sprays

  • Antihistamines or corticosteroids as needed

How does COAT DEFENSE® help ALLEVIATE Sweet Itch?

  • COAT DEFENSE® Sensitive Skin HORSE SHAMPOO offers gentle moisture and soothing relief for aggravated skin, perfect for horses suffering from chemical or environmental irritations. Horse owners trust it to maintain skin integrity and prevent future issues. Free from harsh ingredients, it protects the skin’s natural oils and microbiome, ensuring a soft, shiny coat. Use it as often as needed—your horse’s comfort is our priority!
Aloe stands as the first ingredient, a therapeutic miracle for skin and coat. Unlike conventional shampoos, its lather emerges from naturally saponified coconut and olive oil, free from Sodium Laurel Sulfate. Our shampoo is free of fragrance chemicals found in most other shampoos. "Fragrance" on a label is an umbrella term for thousands of chemical mixtures, often derived from petroleum. These substances are recognized skin allergens, carcinogens and hormone disruptors—harmful combinations marketed as beneficial for your horse. The scent is a refreshing citrus derived from natural tangerine oil. The formula is concentrated, so a little goes a long way. An 8-ounce bottle yields 32 ounces. A capful or two in a bucket, dilute in a spray bottle, or apply it full-strength (simply add more water to create suds). To maximize the benefits of the Aloe, leave it on for 5-7 minutes after lathering before rinsing thoroughly. Rinse completely and allow it to dry.

  • COAT DEFENSE® daily PREVENTATIVE POWDER can be used daily to reduce the severity of bug bite reactions.  If your pony is reacting systemically to saliva from fly or Midges bites, the ingredients (particularly bentonite clay) on the surface of the skin will absorb some of the saliva (but won’t stop the bite). We’ve seen dramatic reduction in welt size on horses with localized reactions when using the powder on a regular basis, which is why we have created a larger refill size. The ingredients also reduce the sensation of itch and calm skin; keeping rashes and hives to a minimum providing a healthy environment that allows skin to breathe and create natural oils. Many of our friends save both mane and tails from becoming bald when applying down to the skin. Amongst many other things, the powder is effective at dehydrating microorganisms like bacteria, fungus, and even mites that thrive under thick hair.

  • COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE is the “Big Gun” for itch. This was developed for scratches and wounds due to its drawing and drying capabilities. Relieves itch and becomes a shell to protect from additional bites by smearing on sensitive, bite prone areas to provide a BARRIER bugs can’t penetrate, along the belly line, under the jaw, and other trouble spots. It’s great for welts from bites and is so effective for itch we made a human version of it for acne, poison ivy, and itchy bug bites. Smear some on your arm and you’ll feel an instant chill. Horses that experience discomfort and chest irritation from itching walk into this with a big sigh of relief.
Pro-tip: Thin COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE with witch hazel or water to spread a thin layer on bite prone areas to create a shield against biting insects. This is also great for areas of high movement where thicker applications may flake off when dried.

"I’m so impressed with how quickly Missy's hair grew back. It stopped the constant scratching from her terrible seasonal bout with sweet itch, and the spots that were rubbed raw healed so fast!”
