How to Remedy Summer Sores on Horses

How to Remedy Summer Sores on Horses

What are Summer Sores?

Summer sores are the result of insect larvae infecting a wound also known as, cutaneous habronemiasis, habronematidosis, granular dermatitis, and jack sores. They can appear in many areas but are most commonly found on the face, around the mouth, or the genital area. Characteristically, they look like open lesions that may have granulation tissue present with itching and oftentimes, are difficult to heal. A wound does not have to be present for flies to infect an area. A summer sore can also form from flies feeding on a wet area without a wound present. This is an unsightly and messy issue that can become a serious infection if left untreated. Ridding them is usually a two-step approach, from the inside with dewormers such as ivermectin, and outside with prescription medicated creams that often fall short in giving quick relief.

COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE has effectively helped horses with summer sores. The best part? No prescription needed.

A tiny scrape or bug bite can turn into a nasty summer sore virtually in the blink of an eye. Preventative measures can help you avoid these situations, however, if your horse develops a summer sore, you want to make sure it’s treated before it worsens.

The best way to prevent summer sores in horses is to keep insect populations in and around the barn as low as possible. Keep stalls, pastures, and run-in areas clean. You can also use fly sheets, traps, and fly spray to minimize exposure to larva but even with the best intentions, insects can be unavoidable. Any open wounds should be covered with COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE to create a protective barrier while providing quick healing and relief. COAT DEFENSE® daily PREVENTATIVE POWDER can also be used as a preventative for itching, chafing, girth galls, scratches, and other skin issues that can turn into wounds for fly larva to infect.

What is COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE?

Our paste is a non-toxic formula with a thick consistency that creates a protective barrier and defends the skin cells from pathogens and moisture. Fungus and bacteria both require moisture to survive and thrive. COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE provides the skin with a dry environment to enable healing while continuously drawing out moisture to allow the body to repair damaged cells. The drawing ability can also help draw pests, foreign material, and ooze from the wound.

You simply apply COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE to the affected area; it is that simple!  Do not wash the paste off daily, allow it to sit and begin to flake off on its own before rinsing and reapplying.

No More Summer Sores!

Don’t wait until a bug bite becomes a summer sore. ELIMINATE and PREVENT with COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE and daily PREVENTATIVE POWDER. Our non-toxic paste and powder bundle works to draw, dry and protect against nasty bites that can fester, becoming a painful irritation to your horse.
