This product works very well as a sunscreen on my horse’s white nose. Bonus that she absolutely loves when I rub this on her muzzle…. And it smells great. She had not been a fan of previous sunscreens.

Description
COAT DEFENSE® FIELD COAT - 9oz, our new sunblock and multipurpose remedy for horses! This formula not only protects against the sun, but also creates a bacteria- and fungus-free environment—supporting quick healing of nicks and cuts while restoring moisture-starved skin to healthy condition. Horses love the warm, soothing relief FIELD COAT brings.
Use it as precursor to TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE when treating hard, dried scratches. Softening tougher scabs can help the TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE penetrate, permeate, work effectively when scabs are too thick
Ingredients
Organic Castor Oil, Organic Argan Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Zinc Oxide, Sodium Bicarbonate, Bentonite Clay, Non-GMO Corn Starch, Arrowroot, Sweet Almond Oil, Hempseed Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Beeswax, Goldenseal, Yellow Dock, Comfrey Root, Alkanet Root, Slippery Elm, Shea Butter, Propolis, Clove Oil, Vitamin E (natural tocopherol)
Product Use Guide
Our formula combines zinc oxide for natural sun protection with a powerhouse mix of healing oils, clays, and botanical extracts. Together, they:
- Shield from harmful UV rays – Zinc oxide forms a physical barrier that reflects the sun’s rays, preventing sunburn and photo damage, especially on light-skinned or white-marked areas.
- Create a clean, healing environment – Bentonite clay, goldenseal, and comfrey root help draw out impurities, discourage bacterial and fungal growth, and promote faster wound recovery.
- Soothe irritation & reduce itching – Organic castor oil, argan oil, sweet almond oil, and hempseed oil deeply penetrate to moisturize and calm inflamed or dry skin, relieving the itch from dried bug bites, dermatitis, or rubs.
- Support healthy hair regrowth – Nutrient-rich oils (including vitamin E and grapeseed oil) nourish follicles, helping restore hair in rubbed or scarred areas.
- Soften stubborn scabs & dry patches – Shea butter, beeswax, and slippery elm hydrate and soften thick, dry skin.
Perfect for:
- Daily sun protection for sensitive skin, pink noses, and white markings
- Soothes skin and aids hair growth after sweat, tack and spur rubs
- Speeding recovery from nicks, cuts, and minor abrasions
- Relieving dry, itchy skin and flaky coronet bands, hips and hocks
- Softening scars and thickened scabs
Directions
Apply a thin layer to affected areas as needed. Make sure the area is clean and dry prior to application.
For sun protection: Apply a thin layer to prone areas. Repeat as needed.
Pro Tip: When treating hard, dried scratches, apply FIELD COAT first to soften scabs. Once softened, TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE can penetrate and work more effectively.

Our pony's nose healed up in less than 2 weeks using the Field Coat.

This smells so good, my horse even liked it! It is the perfect consistency to get it on his pink nose and muzzle just right, even on the edge of his nostrils. He didn’t try wiping it off, either.

Jo is a 39 year old QH rescue here at Beauty's Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, Inc. She had chronic patches of sores along her back from allergies that would be attacked by flies and the patches would get sunburned. Coat Defense has made a world of differnce for her. She's looking and feeling great! Thank you Coat Defense!

I love the way this stuff goes on. It seems to work really well. It stays on for a couple days and she hasn't had any sun burns. Works well around the eyes. I just wish the bottle was bigger for the price. With a big head I have to use a lot.

Champ had a huge kick or bite laceration on his right side just above his belly. These pictures show the progression once I starting applying Field Coat. This started on 7/16 and it's been just about a month and the hair is growing back nicely. Thanks Coat Defense. I love your products!

My mare wears a long flymask all summer to protect her muzzle’s pink skin. She has been sunburnt in the past and applying sunblock or Desiten has posed great challenges, even before her skin becomes irritated by the summer sun. Each time I apply the Field Coat she is more receptive and licks and chews once it’s on her face. The chapped dry skin not protected by the mask is completely healed. Very pleased with this new Coat Defense product!

I have been pleased with other Coat Defense products so was interested in trying the latest Field Coat. It worked great! My senior with PPID gets weird rubbed spots in the hot weather. Field Coat soothed the area, kept the bugs off, and supported the hair growing back quickly. Highly recommended!

Have been using it on my pink faced, perlino filly for sunburn recovery and sunscreen. This and a good uv controlled fly mask have cleared up her skin very nicely and helped to grow the hair back. Bonus that it helped clear up fungus as well. Will keep it in stock from now on. Highly recommended.

Great product, I used this on my dog where she was losing hair around her neck. I am sure because of her age at 14.5 years. Help to replace it

His nose stayed protected and it helped heal the existing irritation too! Bonus is he doesn’t mind me putting it on. He hated everything else until I tried this. Yay! Protect the pink noses!!!

Product is great. I had good results but need more consistency of application, does a good job with inconsistent application. Originally bought this for my mare's pink nose. It does better as a scratches, scrape repair. Wish it came in a flip top lid, like a shampoo bottle. Would buy again.

Before field coat my boy’s nose would FRY. Even with a fly mask covering his nose. South Texas is BRUTAL in the summer. I usually apply field coat every other day and his nose is beautiful! This product is AMAZING!!!

“Loverboy” had a VERY red nose before I started applying this. I rub it in all the way thru his blaze as well. It must feel good because he lowers his head and doesn’t fuss one bit as I apply it to his nose. Now his nose is just pink instead of crispy red. I’m so glad to have this for him!

4 of our horses have pink noses. We have been using Field Coat on all of them for the past few weeks and even our foal approves. Emma (pictured) is very sensitive so she is cautious about anything we use on her but she definitely looks forward to having it put on her nose every day. 5 stars from our crew. We provide equine-assisted services to veterans and individuals with disabilities. We also rehabilitate horses. Some horses have sensitivity to products.

My amazing APHA buckskin yearling stud colt, Toby, was blessed with the SW3 gene that he inherited from his sire. This gene has expressed in the form of a half bald face on my boy. Luckily he has almost comete black "eyeliner" on the bald side of his face to help his vision. Since Toby spends half of his time outdoors right now, I struggled for awhile to find a way to keep that side of his face from burning. I tried full nose fly masks, human sunscreen and even limiting his time spent in sunlight, which is no easy feat since I live in Georgia! I tried everything, all to no avail...until a friend told me about Field Coat and even let me sample some of hers to decide if it would benefit Toby. Now I can say that I absolutely LOVE the Coat Defense Field Coat! What a game changer! Not only does it protect Toby's face before developing any burns, but in the off chance that I miss a reapplication and he gets a slight sunburn, I just apply the Field Coat and voila! Burn is gone overnight! I feel better knowing that I am doing what is best for his well being and his face stays perfectly handsome for when we show at Halter and Showmanship! Such a phenomenal product! Thank you! Sincerely, Nikki V of Madison, GA

As a life long Paint owner, this worked so well on my horse’s white muzzle. It is thin and easy to rub on, but coverage is the same as thick sunscreen.

My horse is allergic to bug bites She reacts with big open sores in a few hours . Only product that stops the reaction and goes into healing mode in 24 hours

My chestnut has a fully white nose that would severely blister. Field coat plus a fly mask has helped tremendously. Even if only applied every other day!

This produxt STAYS on the noses of my nursing foals. Always an issue when they rub the hair off their noses/mouth/eyes from nursing. Right in the hot Texas sun. Zinc never stayed on... this product is FABULOUS. And even while nursing stayed on 2-3 days. MAGICAL !

We used this on our dog to protect him from burns in the summer and try to soothe his dry skin. I’m impressed! The lotion is lightly exfoliating and has the thicker claylike feel at first; as you rub it in, it becomes more of a powder. Note that it does leave a white cast (like the old school lifeguard sunscreens) but it is not greasy and doesn’t rub off onto clothes or anything once applied. The lingering color actually leaves me more confident that the sunscreen effect will last a few days at a time. But besides that, after one application his skin was so much smoother and clearer, and somehow moisturized despite the clay seeming like it would be drying. It exfoliated off a few of dry scaly skin and even soothed some raw areas behind his ear.

I wanted to let you know that I purchased this product about a month ago. One of my horses was scratching his face a lot, so much that he would rub his hair off. It is now completely gone! I am sorry I didn’t take before pictures but wanted to thank you 🙏

I have a paint that lived most of his life at high altitude in Colorado....he has a bald face...all white. He lost an eye to cancer several years ago...he wears a sunscreen mask 24/7 to protect the other eye...I have a mask that goes to the tip of his nose...but he hates it...I have used Balmex (recommended by the vet) and he hates that too...I put your product on and he hardly fusses at all....very compliant and calm.

My horse has severe summer allergies to midges. Lots of rubbed raw spots, mostly mane, tail and belly. I rubbed this into his main and tail, it smells nice and I think it creates a good barrier, but I can't tell if it helps.
