What is Proud Flesh in Horses?

What's Proud Flesh? And Why Should I Care

When wounds don't start healing quickly - your horse is a candidate for Proud Flesh.

AMAZING!!

My mare cut her leg that developed proud flesh. The wound was the size of my palm. I purchased the paste. I changed the dressing 3 times and tonight it was the maybe 2” long and 1/4” wide!!! I have never seen anything work so effectively with little effort.

Proud Flesh, also known as exuberant granulation tissue, is a common condition that is the result of a normal internal healing process which continues to evolve outside of the wound due to an abnormally long skin healing process. Proud flesh is most commonly found on lower leg wounds, such as those caused by wire cuts, abrasions, or lacerations. It can also occur on other parts of the body where there is a lot of movement, such as the fetlock joint.

It generally begins to appear about 12-15 days after the initial wound. In nature, scabbing occurs within three days and supports new skin growth which would be perfect timing to meet with the granulated flesh growing internally - no problem. When we introduce current wound care, we are killing bacteria but impeding scab growth by applying the antibiotic creams that are suspended in a Petroleum jelly, lanolin, or honey base. These liquids do not evaporate or dry causing the scab to be impeded and not form for days on end.

Good Paste!

My boy had an injury that started showing signs of proud flesh developing as it was healing. This paste knocked it down with in a couple of days. Did not have to have the vet out. It also helped take the itchiness out of some fly bites. Great little jar to have in your horsey tool box!

How to Treat Proud Flesh in Horses

Once the proud flesh has been removed, apply COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE to help promote healing and prevent the excessive growth of tissue.

In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the proud flesh and promote healing. This may involve excising the tissue with a scalpel or using laser therapy to remove the tissue.

It is important to monitor the wound closely during the healing process to ensure that the proud flesh does not return. Regular application of COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE will promote healing and prevent the excessive growth of tissue.

To avoid this extremely painful situation, please use COAT DEFENSE® TROUBLE SPOT DRYING PASTE immediately after the wound. This will insure skin repair well within the window that nature provides to completely avoid both proudflesh and excessive scarring that results.

I consistently buy this product! It's the only thing that works for my allergic, to all bugs, mare

Amazing product as always, my mare could not live without it. She is EXTREMELY allergic to flies and other bugs used to have secondary infections all the time, hives, I couldn't even saddle her because her entire mid-line was one big open wound so couldn't put a cinch over that. Coat defense cleared it up and keeps her allergies as bay, I put it on every day to make sure the flies/bugs can't irritate/bite her. Also use this for any cut or wound my horses get. Recently had one put its leg through a wire fence and tore it up. Coat defense got it healed, no infection, no proud flesh, no complications. Couldn't recommend this product enough!!! It needs more than 5 stars.
