Is Your Pet Shampoo Greenwashed?

What is Greenwashing?
And what does it mean for your pets?

"We’re living in a time where more people are taking responsibility for their health and wellness... and that includes their furry family members as well."

Why Should We Care About Greenwashing?

Living in the modern world leaves us, and our pets, exposed to toxins. From the cleaning products we use to the bug spray we apply, this daily exposure adds up. Ingredients are known to contribute, and even cause, chronic health issues in both humans and animals.

We know it is impossible to live in a bubble and avoid all exposures, but small changes can have a profound effect on our ability to stay well. When we start to become conscious of these toxins and eliminate them where we can, it makes it easier for our body to deal with larger environmental insults that we can’t always control.

We can start in the home to help protect our family, both two-leggers and four. By starting to replace everyday consumer products, like you and your dogs shampoo, we can lessen the toxins our families are exposed to.

"Many companies have been cashing in on this demand. We see it in grocery stores all around us. Do we trust them? Which ones are doing the right things? Greenwashing is a term that refers to brands using language or packaging to promote themselves as being natural and safe…when really they’re not."

Who Regulates Greenwashing?

There are no laws that regulate marketing terms and product claims when it comes to pet OR human shampoos. Words like "natural", "organic", "nontoxic", "gentle", "hypoallergenic", etc. can mean anything, or nothing at all.

For most pet shampoos and topical products, you need to be a toxicologist to know if what you’re reading on an ingredient list will cause health concerns for you, your family, or your pet.

On top of this, words like "fragrance", "parfum", and "aroma" are umbrella terms that allow companies to hide multiple chemicals in their formulas. There’s no way of knowing what's really in a product when these words are on a label, making it that much more confusing!

Ingredients are listed in order of volume. Many companies will list ‘Key Ingredients’ that are beneficial and natural, but if you inspect these closer, they're listed LAST on the list... buried under all the other junk. This is one way other companies spin their ‘green’ products as natural and safe.

COAT DEFENSE® answers to a higher calling... You don’t have to be a toxicologist to read and understand the ingredients in any of our formulas.
